A lot of abbreviations get bandied about, especially when it comes to technology. One abbreviation you may have heard about, especially if your office uses its fax machine a lot, is fax ATA.
What is fax ATA? Most likely, it is your gateway to modern faxing.
Fax ATA stands for fax analog telephone adapter. What fax ATA does is transform a mild-mannered fax machine into a fax-over-IP (FoIP) beast capable of all kinds of cool technological feats.
Fax ATA enables this transformation by connecting to the Internet a traditional fax machine built to use the analogue telephone network. In this way, an old-school fax machine can become a modern fax that uses the Internet instead of telephone lines.
The main device on the market for this purpose is the AudioCodes (News - Alert) HTTPS Fax ATA. It is an advanced fax product that connects fax machines and multi-function printers (MFPs) to cloud-based fax solutions and premise-based fax servers using HTTPS.
By using the AudioCodes HTTPS fax architecture, the HTTPS Fax ATA combines superior fax reliability, security, and cutting-edge features while preserving the easy and familiar experience of fax.
The reasons for upgrading from traditional fax to FoIP are many.
Chief among the benefits of FoIP is to allow faxes to take advantage of advanced document routing that can send faxes to e-mail or set off an automated business process.
Digital faxes also means that optical character recognition can be employed to make the faxes searchable, which opens up a whole new world to the usefulness of fax and the business processes that can be set up through the technology.
Mobility also is a good reason to move to FoIP. The days of working in an office during all business hours is all but gone. Today, most workers spend at least some time handling work remotely, whether that be a quick dollop of work while home or a more planned telecommute situation.
With FoIP, faxing can travel with the mobile worker as easily as email and telephone calling now travels with us. By having all business communication accessible through smartphone, workers are able to more effectively handle business when they are outside of the office.
Fax ATA technology makes this possible without having to invest in new fax machines.
